Time is a Pendulum

I hear artists tell me they don’t want to write commercial pop music (it’s not their style) and therefore they don’t write anything at all because they think it doesn’t matter and no one will hear it.

Well of course all we’ll have is commercial pop music if everyone who writes other types of music gives up.

Here’s a thought… the “modern pop” sound is OVER-SATURATED - there’s a million people who can produce cool sounds but it’s much rarer to find people who put heart-felt substance into these sounds.

The pendulum is in motion...

People might listen to anything for 3 minutes on the radio, but for a song to become a “favorite” it typically takes a bit more substance than that, something tangible in the story to connect with. Having an experience or idea to share (unique to you!) is FAR more important when writing than the genre or synth sound you use. Heck, it’s even more important than knowing anything about how to write a song.

Create from your experiences, don’t worry about what genre is popular. Cool people make things cool, that’s how every new trend has started.

For the record, I don’t have anything against pop music, I’m an avid student of it! But I do think there could be more diversity of stories and voices in the mainstream.

Good vibrations to all.
